The Glaring Facts

Sometimes we get tired of telling people the facts. How sunglasses protect your vision. How they preserve clarity, and help you to see clear and safe. But nobody likes to be told do they? People like to be shown.

Polaroid have set up a little scientific experiment to show everyone how the negative effects of glare can be thwarted. And how science can sometimes be pretty darn hilarious.

Two athletic ladies wait for various objects, including cake and jelly, to be catapulted at them. Will they knock it out the way in time, or will their sunglasses fail to deal with glare and end up with messy, but hilarious, results?

You'll find out over at Polaroid Labs.

V Is In Vogue

So that's V Festival done for another year. And as expected it was another blinder, one that ended in a stream of tired but happy faces exiting the gates of Hylands Park in Essex and Weston Park in Staffordshire.

We got to see Jessie J on stage much like she was when Sunglasses Shop saw her at The Big Chill – with one leg strapped in a cast and the rest of her squeezed into a ironically-garish catsuit. A mere broken leg can't stop a determined entertainer like Jessie J!

The Arctic Monkeys rattled through their hits and grabbed attention as much for their adrenaline-fuelled performance as they did for Alex Turner's new haircut, which has so far divided opinions across the fashion, music and gossip magazines. We at Sunglasses Shop like the change though - fifties fashion statements always gets the thumbs up from us. Just like these fantastically fifties Ray-Ban sunglasses.

Mark Ronson made sure to play 'Valerie' in tribute to his old friend Amy Winehouse. He was joined by Dionne Bromfield, Amy's goddaughter, for the tribute – an emotional moment that left no watching eyes dry.

Rihanna brought a bit of spice to V and wore not very much at all, making sure she gave everyone something to remember. Eminem finished off Sunday's line-up, with Rihanna taking to the stage with him for an explosive version of 'Love The Way You Lie' closing the festival for another year. Roll on the next one!

Tom Ford's Muse

Jon Kortajarena, the sultry muse of design-supremo Tom Ford, makes a striking appearance in a Tom Ford advert in the September issue of GQ. One side of the advert sees him dressed in a giant black coat, the other side sees him wearing an electric blue velour jacket with a lovely bit of accessorising – a bow tie.

Jon's also dressed up with the Tom Ford Campbell, a wayfarer inspired frame that suits him perfectly. Then again, when you're one of the highest earning models in the world like Jon, pretty much anything is guaranteed to suit you. The lucky devil.

Many people will recognise Jon from his part in Tom Ford's award-winning film A Single Man. He played a temptatious drifter who momentarily distracted Colin Firth's character from his grief over his dead lover. Tom Ford counts Jon as one of his muses, along with ex-Skins actor Nicholas Hoult, and perhaps the distraction experienced by Colin Firth's character was inspired by the relationship between Tom Ford and Jon? The mind boggles.

Jon Kortajarena has inspired Tom Ford, and Tom Ford has inspired us at Sunglasses Shop. We wonder if it goes full circle – has Jon ever been inspired by Sunglasses Shop? We'd like to think so.

Take Your Sunglasses Somewhere Nice

England hasn't had the best summer. Looking back, it feels like every day was a cloud-covered one and we felt bad for our poor sunglasses suffering in the gloomy weather.

But what could we do? We're sunglasses gurus, not travel agents. We're stuck here. Or, at least, we were.

We've been working on something special, something exciting. The world's first travel guide for globe-trotting sunglasses.

Why not give your sunglasses the sunny treat they deserve? Heck, you could even go on holiday with them.

Sunglasses Shop At The Big Chill

Sunglasses Shop were lucky enough to get tickets for The Big Chill and, well, let's just say it took us a while to recover when we returned home last week. Late nights, traipsing up and down hills, having a little dance... the weekend took its toll on us. But when we got home it sure didn't take long for us to start missing Eastnor Castle, so we're pretty glad we've got our festival guide to help us relive the memories.

We checked out the acts, sampled The Big Chill's festival food, and, of course, went on the hunt for those all-important sunglasses. We hassled the festival-going public and made them pose for us in all their shade-tastic glory - we even got some snaps of rapper Chipmunk rocking out in Ray-Ban.

So check out our Big Chill experience in all its chilled out glory - if you were there, you might even spot yourself.

Global Gathering

This weekend, Sunglasses Shop will be at Long Marston Airfield in Stratford-Upon-Avon. While we love a good airfield from time to time, the reason we'll be there is much more exciting - it's the number one electronic music festival, Global Gathering!

Forward thinking and defiantly cutting edge, Global Gathering showcases the hottest underground acts, pitting them alongside critically acclaimed DJs and chart-topping superstars. It's essential for anyone who has ever tapped their feet along to a beat.

Headlining the main stage on Friday, drum and bass chart-stormers Pendulum will help us rave the night away to their electro and d'n'b infusion.

Global Gathering have another superstar act for us to get excited about - two-time Brit winner Tinie Tempah will return after a triumphant performance last year. Tinie Tempah is the man in Ray-Ban and one of our favourites. We can't wait to jive to his slick take on the grime.

Also riding high on the wave of critical acclaim, Chase and Status will unleash their grimy beats and booming bass on Global Gathering. And we're going to soak the whole lot up.

The real question though... what sunglasses to get involved with?

The Jeepers Peepers Saba has a distinctive style. We reckon this'll make us stand out from the huge crowds at Global Gathering.

But then what about the Carrera Champion? A classic style, and definitely something we could get behind.

The British Grand Prix

The clouds gathering overhead threaten to dampen the efforts made throughout Silverstone's Friday practice session. Bulging at the seams, looking too heavy to stay airbourne, the clouds soon burst and the British Grand Prix braces itself for a Formula 1 weekend that looks set to be doused in rain.

Last year's race saw Mark Webber drive like a man possessed, determined to cross the line first and in front of his Red Bull team-mate Alex Vettel, who Webber felt Red Bull favoured over him. It made for a tense, exciting race, especially with Silverstone favourite Lewis Hamilton on Webber's tail for most of the race.

This year's race looks to be a little soggier than the last, with few weather professionals optimistic about the weekend's prospects for good weather. Rain or shine, Sunglasses Shop will be following the Grand Prix and we're bound to see sunglasses being worn by driver and spectator alike.

In Pole Position

The image of the race driver wandering around the paddock, with his eyes concealed behind dark lenses, is a lasting one mastered by the likes of Jackie Stewart and Stirling Moss, and continued today by style-conscious drivers like Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso in particular is bound to wear sunglasses – bound by contract to be precise, due to being the latest sports star to be adopted into the Oakley family. Alonso is tied to Oakley like Jenson Button was once tied to Ray-Ban when he raced for Brawn GP in 2009 – a team that only existed for one season but, due to winning that sole season, is the only Formula 1 team with a 100% season win rate.

Driven To Victory

F1 drivers and sunglasses combined to winning effect when Serengeti and Alain Prost worked together to produce a limited edition range of Serengeti sunglasses. The ultimate in driving sunglasses, the Alain Prost versions of the Coppa, Piers and Torini united driving excellence with streamlined technology to produce a range of sunglasses as distinguished as Alain Prost's career.

Rain or shine, the British Grand Prix is the one to watch and Sunglasses Shop will be doing just that, waiting for the chequered flag.

Fighting Haye-Fever

If you caught the fight on Saturday, you may have noticed the sunglasses David Haye wore in the post-fight conference. After his title unification fight against the more-mountain-than-man man mountain Wladimir Klitschko, heavyweight ex-champion David Haye threw on a pair of Ray-Ban to face the hungry flashbulbs of the waiting sports journalists.

Haye opted for the Ray-Ban 4099, a visor frame that covered his eyes and helped him hide the shame of defeat. Haye reckoned he broke a toe in training three weeks before, an injury which hindered his performance during the fight, and said he wasn't sure about retiring as planned when he really wants a rematch with Klitschko.

Haye might be waiting a long, long time for that to happen, seeing as it took a couple of years to get Klitschko out for this bout, so we at Sunglasses Shop reckon perhaps it's time to lay down the gloves. After all, with all that fighting he does, he might end up scratching his Ray-Ban sunglasses!

All Hail Hailee

At the young age of fourteen, Hailee Steinfeld received an Oscar nomination for her performance in the Coen Brother's remake of True Grit. Her mature performance as Mattie Ross went down so well she was considered for the Best Supporting Actress Award, and now, on top of that recognition, design house Miu Miu have chosen her to be the face of their new ad campaign.

In the campaign Hailee shows a maturity well beyond her young age as she poses beside a dusty railway track wearing pieces from Miu Miu's latest collection, even wearing a frame from the new Miu Miu sunglasses range.

In another photograph Hailee is surrounded by shoes, and in another she tucks into a slice of pizza. Hailee works the photographer with a maturity beyond her years, and she's certain to be the envy of countless fashionistas for many years too.

The Decade That Style Remembered

It's no surprise the Eighties are constantly labelled the decade that style forgot. Considering how common fingerless gloves and bum bags were, those years were certainly an interesting era for fashion. Garish colours and vulgar hairstyles stooped to new lows of gaudiness, and let's not even start with the music...

But although the Eighties had a few questionable trends, those who choose to write off the decade as one big fashion faux-pas are missing out. Some of our latest sunglasses collections prove there was a little more to the Eighties than perms and legwarmers.

Take the Nooka Mercury. The Eighties are truly back with a vengeance with this visor frame - unlike most frames today, there's no Sixties or Seventies influence in this electric little number from New York design company Nooka.

Even if you already own a visor sunglass, there's no way it can match the distinctive style of the Nooka Mercury. The acid colour range is totally Eighties and has already bewitched loads of celebs, including Jason Derulo, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. And if that doesn't prove the Eighties are back, then what does?

Glastonbury

It's the big one, the one that started it all. The one everyone in the world wants to go to, but only 130,000 will get tickets. And it's finally here!

Glastonbury's undoubtedly the number one music festival on the planet. It's been rocking since the Seventies, and with that much history behind it Glasto's guaranteed to be another banger of a festival this year. After dropping out last year due to Bono's back injury, U2 will headline the Pyramid Stage along with Coldplay and Beyonce, with literally hundreds of acts crammed in over the weekend.

And the legend of Glastonbury demands legendary sunglasses. The likes of Lily Allen, Daisy Lowe and Kelly Osbourne haunt the backstage area of Glastonbury, and Sunglasses Shop can't wait to see what sunnies get unleashed on the Glasto crowds!

The Big Chill

Well, we're excited. Festival season is kicking off, huge tents are being put up all over the country and people everywhere are getting in the festival mood. Including Sunglasses Shop! But there's one date in particular we can't wait for...

The Big Chill! The festival we can't wait to be seen at. Kanye West, The Chemical Brothers, Rodrigo Y Gabriela... it's a high quality line up this year and we're dying for the 4th August to come around. Killer line up, killer crowds, killer sunglasses... predictable as always, Sunglasses Shop can't wait for the Big Chill to start purely because of the sunglass factor.

It's always been chilled, but The Big Chill hasn't always been big. It only started up in 1994 at a little place over in Islington, but nowadays thousands upon thousands of people descend on the new site in Herefordshire to get chilled in a very big way. That means a heck of a lot more sunglasses to gaze longingly at!

August 4th can't come quick enough. We can't wait to hear the glam-infused electronic sounds of the Empire of the Sun, or the non-booze-infused soul singing of Amy Winehouse's goddaughter Dionne Broomfield.

Company Magazine said "The original – and still the best – boutique festival". We can't wait to see if it's still true...

The Trench Connection

If any brand lives for the trench coat, it's Burberry. The quintessentially English label invented the iconic trench coat back when England was still ruled by Queen Victoria.

But Burberry's latest trench coats come with a fresh twist: pieces from the Burberry Prorsum collection come with sleeves coated in studs. An edgy look that needs the accessories to match which, of course, Burberry are all too happy to supply.

Among those accessories are a range of sunglasses that typify the typically English fashion sense of Burberry and prove they are every bit the English fashion powerhouse their heritage suggests.

Tod's to restore the Colosseum

Three cheers for luxury accessories brand Tod’s, which will fund a £21.5million restoration of the Coliseum in Rome.

Tods 0034 Brown Gradient

President of the Tod’s group, Diego Della Valle, said 'We believe that because the Tod’s Group is a strong global representative of ‘Made in Italy’, it is both an honour and our duty to contribute to the support of our country’s image and credibility, as well as its cultural heritage.'

The Coliseum is still a popular tourist attraction but has become damaged by pollution. It will remain open to tourists throughout the restoration.

We wonder what Tod’s will get in return for their generosity? Permission to place billboards of Tod’s sunglasses outside?

Aurevoir Paris

Yves Saint Laurent brought menswear to a close at Paris yesterday. Creative director Stefano Pilati played with volume by pairing slim trousers with blouson-style jackets and even capes, adding pops of colour via checks and bright polo necks.

Equally impressive is the 2011 Yes Saint Laurent sunglasses collection that looks sophisticated and elegant with luxurious prints and patterns.

With summer bearing upon us, we have put together a list of sunglasses that we would love to wear for our beach holidays. At the top of our list is the beautifully styled Yves Saint Laurent 6324 in Grey. With the Yves Saint Laurent signature on the left lens, these sunglasses are everything you could want for long afternoons by the pool.

Yves saint Laurent 6324 Grey

Next is the Yves Saint Laurent 2307 in Havana which gives this frame a seductive and sophisticated feel. Sleek and shiny metal stems show off the frame front in all its glory, giving this frame a deluxe feel. The thickness of the arms keeps the frame contemporary and maintains the high end feel.

Yves saint Laurent 2307 Havana

Last but by no means least is the Yves Saint Laurent 2305 in Dark Havana that reflects a modernistic sixties style. The sophisticated palette of dark tortoiseshell is typical of the French
fashion house designer and the sleek simple arms hold intricate branded detailing for an altogether, chic shade.

Spring Summer 2011 trends

Hold the phone – stock for Spring/Summer 2011 has arrived and is leaving us speechless.

Dior Ondine Mauve

The future is bright with vibrant colours and shapes. Pinks and purples for women, blues and greens for men. Leading the way for the season is DiorJohn Galliano knows no wrong – with the sizzling hot Dior Ondine. This luxurious collection includes violet and mauve frames that are decorated in Swarovski crystals. They are gorgeous.

Tom Ford James Silver

There is also the Tom Ford James in silver with brilliantly blue lenses. Summer is full of many
tempting shades - watch this space – but we have singled these out for their bright blue lenses, slick silver frame and oversized structure. Tom Ford sunglasses will take any outfit to the max. But we think they will look great worn with a light blue denim shirt, dark denim jeans and white plimsolls.

Thoughts?

Baby Bloom has arrived

Miranda Kerr wearing Ray-Ban 2140 Wayfarer sunglasses

Congratulations to Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr on the birth of their baby son.

Ray-Ban 2140 Wayfarer Tortoise

The supermodel gave birth at a Los Angeles hospital with Orlando and her family by her side. Both mother and son are said to be doing ‘very well’, according to his grandmother.

The couple has since posted an intimate photo showing their baby son Flynn, who weighed in at 9 pounds and 13 ounces.

Miranda has also revealed, “I gave birth to him naturally; without any pain medication and it was a long, arduous and difficult labour, but Orlando was with me the whole time supporting and guiding me through it. I could not have done it without him.”

Perhaps we should send Flynn a pair of Zoobug sunglasses. After all, it is never too early to wear
sunglasses.

Helena Bonham Carter stands out at Golden Globes

Helena Bonham Carter wearing vintage Oliver Peoples Sheldrake sunglasses

The 2011 Golden Globes market the return of old Hollywood glamour, with Helena Bohem Carter opting to cover up on the red carpet in vintage sunglasses.

Oliver Peoples Sheldrake Storm with Grey

She lost out to Melissa Leo for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. But she more than made up for it with her chosen accessories.

The actress chose a colourful multi-layered Vivienne Westwood dress… and mismatched shoes. But scores maximum points in the style stakes in the Oliver Peoples Sheldrake. With a round frame and minimal detailing, the Sheldrake is a great match for Helena and her red carpet ensemble. Enjoy the benefits of vintage looking frame while avoiding the rusting hinges of actual antiques.

We also have to give special mention to Johnny Depp who also choose the Sheldrake but in a different colour.

If this is what Helena wore to the Golden Globes, who know what she has planned for the Oscars!

Devendra Banhart at the Rainbow House

Oliver Peoples 2011 campaign

Devendra Banhart takes a break from his prolific career in folk music to spearhead Oliver
Peoples
2011 campaign. In a departure from last season’s fantasy theme, Oliver Peoples move from the fantastic to the provocative with a series of photos directed by acclaimed photographer Lisa Eisner.

Devendra poses with his real-life lover, set designer Rebecca Schwartz, and the intimacy of their relationship is captured openly on film while they lounge in the Californian sun wearing not very much at all.

Lisa says “We really wanted to find a couple who were in love and would allow us to be voyeurs in their relationship. Most people are not interested in having their intimacy on film. Devendra and Rebecca were beyond perfect, beautiful and fun together. They were not pretentious or guarded – they were real!”

The stylish duo are pictured in Oliver Peoples’ frames for the season ahead, frames heavily inspired by vintage fashion but enhanced with Oliver Peoples unrivalled style. The distinct D-shaped lens of the Jack One sunglass takes inspiration from the customised aviators Neil Diamond wore on the album cover of “Jonathan Livingston Seagull".

Oliver Peoples is well-known for producing spirited short films, combined with still photographs that bring to life their collections each season. Oliver Peoples Devendra Banhart at the Rainbow House is no exception.

Devendra is the ideal front-man for this campaign since he reflects the understated qualities that Oliver Peoples are revered for the world over. Both wait to be discovered rather than scream for your attention and their alliance of subtlety pays off. Oliver Peoples make voyeurs of us all and the fresh personal light that illuminates their new range show they are something worth waiting for.

Cher Lloyd gives her look the fashion factor

Cher Lloyd wearing aviator sunglasses

Cher Lloyd gives her look the fashion factor with a pair of oversized aviators as she attends lunch in Miami.

Ray-Ban CATS 5000 Black Glitter

Since coming fourth in the X Factor, things have been looking up for Cher. The wannabe pop star has been living the high life on her current trip to the US. She flew first class from Miami to Los Angeles on Wednesday. But her luggage was nowhere to be seen as she arrived in the sunshine capital.

Dressed in a red fluffy top, tiger print jeans and heeled boots, Cher only had her hand luggage to hand. Luckily, however, she had kept her stylish aviators atop her head to hide her private gaze from public life. Cher is seldom snapped without a pair of sunglasses and loves an oversized
aviator with those edgy good looks.

Steal her style with a pair of Ray-Ban CATS 5000 aviators in black glitter. This Sunglasses Shop favourite packs a punch with its solid dark framework and sleek arms. Branding is featured on
the on the lens and details include a Ray-Ban signature on the temple. A great unisex style that puts the X Factor into any shades collection.

Gucci Sunglasses 2011 Spring Summer - Runway Sunglasses

Gucci sunglasses, like those of many other big brands, are hit or miss.  Generally they go the safe route and save the more original frames for the runway.  Today we'll look at a few styles only seen on the runway and a few of the more common frames they have out for Spring/Summer 2011.

 Gucci Runway Sunglasses 2011

This is the first frame that caught my eye on from their photo section for 2011, however you won't find it in the list of available frames.  It's a shame, because it is one of the nicer frames they have now.  This begs the question, why display this frame when it's not for sale?  I know they want to generate interest for the season with some sharp frames.
Gucci Sunglasses 2011 Spring Summer GG 1636/S
Gucci Sunglasses 2011 Spring Summer GG 3160/S

These two frames are not bad looking but have a lot of G's all over them.  Though not terribly looking, I could do without the crazy branding.  GG 3160/S above is a sweet-looking cat eye shape, but I prefer minimal frames with this kind of style.

So why do so many brands show stuff at the show that you'll never be able to buy?

Another lost frame.
